In April 2016, Marvel annoncé That Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez, the showrunners for the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil , Would serve as showrunners and executive producers is Marvel’s The Defenders , with Daredevil creator Drew Goddard aussi serving as an executive producer on the miniseries. [36] In January 2015, Netflix COO Ted Sarandos had stated that the series was “eligible to go into multiple seasons for sure” and Netflix would look at “how well [they] are addressing both the Marvel fanbase but also the broader fanbase” In terms of determining if additional seasons would be appropriate. [37] However, in July 2016, Marvel Television head and executive producer Jeph Loeb . Loeb also confirmed that the miniseries would have eight episodes, and stated that Petrie and Ramirez would consult with Melissa Rosenberg , Cheo Hodari Coker , and Scott Buck -the showrunners of Marvel’s Jessica Jones , Marvel’s Luke Cage and Marvel’s Iron Fist , respectively How “their characters would react” to certain situations; [38] the other showrunners read each of the scripts for the Defenders and provided insight into each individual character’s world. [39] On this collaboration, Petrie said of Rosenberg that she was “wonderful because she is in this position of being a fellow artist and letting her do what we do, We want to get it right and wanting to guide us and help up, but also let us be free. ” Rosenberg, who has been in the process of making the show. [40] Loeb compared this relationship to Joss Whedon ‘ s approach with the similar crossover in the MCU movies , Marvel’s The Avengers , for qui Whedon “sought out all of the creative input from everybody That HAD Worked is Iron Man and Hulk and Captain America and Thor , aim He Had to make Avengers icts Own thing. ” [38]

Writing

One of the things that I do not know is that I do not know what to do with it. We are not only interested in what we are doing, but we are also looking forward to working with you. The tones. We think about the tone as its own thing. It’s about making sure this thing is something that could encapsulate all four worlds.

-Showrunner Marco Ramirez on combining elements from the individual series to the tone of the Defenders [41]

By late May 2016, Petrie and Ramirez had turned into a completed story for the miniseries, [42] based on a very bare-bones structure from Loeb. [39] The last described as “epic”, feeling that all the characters “have great roles … when everyone feels like they’re telling more of their own tale.” [42] The intention Was for the miniseries to feel like ” Daredevil season 2.5, a Luke Cage season 1.5, has Jessica Jones 1.5, and Iron Fist 1.5,” telling “the Story That cam after- Their immediate seasons and before Their next ones. ” [39] Loeb compared this dynamic to the Olympics, where “you get to know all of these athletes in their various sports all through their careers, and then once every four years they’re going to get together and compete against each other.” [38] Coker further compared the minerals to the Wu-Tang Clan and Voltron . [13] [38]Coker further compared the minerals to the Wu-Tang Clan and Voltron . [13] [38] Coker further compared the minerals to the Wu-Tang Clanand Voltron . [13]

Petrie, which has been used in the past, has been used in the past. [40] Goddard talked about the resulting genre for the miniseries, since each of the individual series was different from one another. [43] Ramirez added that the series’ tone was “one of the most challenging and most exciting parts of this project”, and “it has really just been about organically blending together the feels like they ‘Re all cohesive and all of a piece. ” [44]Ramirez and the series’ “A corporate mandate”, striving to make it “feel earned and real and grounded … and also topical and important” as the individual series had done. [39]

Cautioning against the “easy comparison” to The Avengers , Loeb said the love with The Defenders was to say “‘OK, how do we do that and how do we do it different?’ We saw how the Avengers came together [and] it did not go smoothly as you’d like it to go. ” [45] He added, “The Defenders did not have a ‘on their belt buckles and a defenders tower. again. ” [46] Loeb aussi Noted That” the sky’s not going to open up and aliens are not going to come flying out of it. That’s the Avengers ‘job, that’s what they’ re Supposed to do. We wanted them all caught off guard [by seeing one another at the same location]. Once they’re fait que room together, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, shit, Who are you ? “. [46]
